Porcelain Gaiwan, 150ml. Hand-Painted Lotus and Goldfish

A delicate Chinese lidded brewing vessel in fine white porcelain, hand-decorated with one of the most beloved motifs in Chinese art: a small red goldfish swimming beneath a lotus. Both carry quiet meaning. The lotus rises unblemished from muddy water, a Buddhist symbol of purity and awakening. Goldfish (jinyu) share their name with the words for "gold and jade," and are long associated with abundance and harmony. Yellow specks around the fish suggest lotus pollen drifting down through the water. A small red seal finishes the composition.

The gaiwan is at the heart of Gong Fu Cha, where short, successive infusions let a single tea reveal itself across many small cups. Its three simple parts (bowl, lid, and saucer) give you full control: fill with hot water, cover briefly, then tilt the lid to pour off the liquor while holding back the leaves.

Porcelain is the traditional material of choice for a gaiwan. It stays neutral in flavour, holds heat cleanly, and lets each tea speak for itself, making it a beautiful all-rounder for greens, whites, oolongs, and blacks alike.
