Bamboo Matcha Whisk
Bamboo Matcha Whisk
The traditional Japanese whisk for preparing matcha. Hand-carved from a single piece of bamboo into dozens of fine, curved prongs. The prongs are what turn matcha from a simple mixture into something velvety: they draw air through the powder as you whisk in a light M or W motion, building the signature soft froth that sits at the top of a proper bowl of usucha.
More prongs mean a finer, silkier foam — a good all-purpose chasen will carry you gracefully through daily matcha.
Material: Natural bamboo.
How to use:
- Before first use, dip the tines briefly in warm water to soften them and open the bell shape.
- Whisk in a quick M or W motion, keeping the tines just off the bottom of the bowl.
Care — bamboo needs a little attention:
- Never soak or use soap — rinse the tines gently in warm water after each use.
- Reshape on a whisk stand (naoshi) to help the prongs dry evenly and retain their curved shape.
- Handled well, a chasen will serve you beautifully for months of daily use before the fine prongs eventually soften — it is considered a natural consumable in the matcha tradition.
